This study, employing an interpretive-positivist paradigmatic approach and utilizing descriptive-analytical and survey research methods within a conceptual theoretical framework, examines the usage and attitudes of respondents regarding the effects of medicinal plants during the COVID-19 pandemic in the city of Dezful. This applied study was conducted as a cross-sectional survey between May and August 2023. The main objective was to describe and analyze people's attitudes toward medicinal plants and the related factors. The primary research instrument was a researcher-developed questionnaire distributed among medicinal plant users through a multistage random cluster sampling method. The survey included both male and female participants without specific age restrictions. Using Cochran’s formula, the sample size was estimated to be 208 individuals. Simple random sampling was employed to select participants from the target population. Data were analyzed using SPSS software, version 26. The findings revealed that the majority of respondents (88%) used medicinal plants during the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, gender and marital status had no significant impact on respondents’ usage or attitudes toward the effects of medicinal plants during the pandemic. Thyme and ginger were the most commonly used herbs for treating sore throat, cough, and other symptoms associated with COVID-19. The results showed that participants used medicinal plants due to interactions and side effects of common non-herbal medicines and easy availability of these plants. An overall assessment of respondents’ attitudes toward medicinal plants during the pandemic showed that 74% had moderate to high level of perception. The majority of them believed that medicinal herbs were reasonably safe, had fewer side effects compared to chemical drugs, and were effective in promoting health. These findings may have implications for future pharmaceutical research and for policymakers.
