Abstract

Tea root lesion nematode (Pratylenchus loosi) is the most important damaging pest of tea in Iran and worldwide, and its management is one of the main priorities in plant protection of this crop. In order to biological control of this nematode by antagonistic fungi, samples were collected from different tea plantations and antagonistic fungi were isolated, identified, and evaluated for their efficacy in the biological control of P. loosi. During the investigations conducted in this study, the fungal species Catenaria anguillulae was isolated from parasitized P. loosi nematodes, and after identification using valid taxonomic keys, experiments were carried out to assess its efficacy. Following antagonistic tests of C. anguillulae against P. loosi on 1.5% water agar, nematode mortality (juveniles and adults) was recorded every 24 hours. The results showed that 72 and 168 hours after inoculation, 19.08% and 46.4% of juveniles and 14.91% and 30.76% of adults, respectively, were attacked by the fungus, and over time the nematode body was gradually degraded. This study represents the first report of this fungal species and its antagonistic effect on nematodes in Iranian tea plantations, particularly on the tea root lesion nematode.
